CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Cyrus pulled the hood off of Lorne Brener’s head. The terrorist’s eyes widened when he saw Jake staring coldly at him. “Hey. I know you. You’re that Jake Mercer guy.”

“That’s me,” Jake agreed.

Lorne turned to Cyrus. “And you… You lying son of a bitch. You don’t have a friend in the Secret Service. You are the Secret Service.”

“Quite astute of you,” Cyrus replied.

“You don’t seem like the brightest bulb in any drawer,” Jake opined, “but I’m willing to bet you’re smart enough to talk to us instead of to our far less kind friends.”

Fear flashed across Lorne’s face, but he tried to put on a brave front. “Fuck you! I’m not saying shit!”

“We’ll see,” Jake said. “To start, how many other terrorists do you know working for Bard?”

“No one. Just me.”

“I find that hard to believe,” Cyrus replied, “because you weren’t surprised at all to hear about me.”

“Yeah, because I thought it made more sense to have someone assassinate the President in Washington D.C. than to wait around until he happened to go to Camp David.”

“Well, that’s the nice thing about terrorists,” Cyrus retorted. “You’re not the brightest bulbs in the drawers.”

“It’s the sharpest knife, dumbass,” Lorne spat. “Both of y’all are dumbasses.”

“Hmm,” Jake said, looking over at Cyrus. “Sharpest knife. That’s an interesting thing to say, considering.”

Lorne paled again. “Considering what?”

“Nah. Let’s not consider it. I’m sure we can keep things cordial. You just need to tell us every single thing you know about Trident, Eli Bard, anyone else working with him, and what they have planned for the President.”

“I told you, I don’t know anything. Bard just told me that I’m supposed to shoot the President if he heads toward Camp David.”

“Where?”

“What?”

“Where are you supposed to shoot him?”

Lorne blinked as though this was the first time the question occurred to him. Hell, for all Jake knew, it was. “I… I don’t know. I didn’t really think about it. I just figured… I mean, I live off of the highway, so I figured he’d be taking the highway.”

“Yeah, I doubt that,” Jake said. “Not even you can be that stupid. So either you have other instructions, or you were waiting for other instructions.”

Lorne’s eyes shifted to the left, and Cyrus said, “That one. You were waiting for other instructions. So what were your instructions?”

“Nothing,” Lorne whined.

“So when were you getting the rest of them?”

“I wasn’t… I mean… I’m not telling you anything! You might as well shoot me now, because I ain’t saying shit!”

He tried to stick his chin out defiantly, but the tremble in his lip made him look like a frightened, petulant child.

Jake stared at him coldly and waited for the color to drain from his face. “We’re not going to shoot you, Lorne,” he said softly. “We’re going to give you to our friends. See, if we play by the rules, we have to get you a lawyer and follow due process. Considering that you represent a direct threat to the President of the United States, we’re really not keen on the idea of due process.
